Need an Apostille?What is it?
An apostille is a form of authentication issued to documents for use in countries that participate in the Hague Convention of 1961. This international treaty simplifies the process of certifying documents for international use, ensuring that they will be recognized in any of the member countries.
How Does an Apostille Work?
Document Preparation:
Before obtaining an apostille, the document must be an original or a certified copy issued by an authorized body, such as a birth certificate, court order, or notarial act.
Notarization (if required):
In some cases, the document might need to be notarized by a notary public before it can be apostilled.
Submission to Competent Authority:
The document is then submitted to the designated Competent Authority in the country where the document originated. In the United States, for example, this is typically the Secretary of State's office or the U.S. Department of State for federal documents.
Issuance of Apostille:
The Competent Authority verifies the signature, seal, or stamp on the document and attaches an apostille certificate, confirming its authenticity.
International Use:
Once attached, the document with the apostille is recognized as valid in all member countries of the Hague Convention.
Why is an Apostille Important?
Legal Recognition: It ensures that your document is legally recognized abroad without further authentication.
Simplifies the Process: It eliminates the need for a lengthy legalization process, which often involves multiple steps and various authorities.
Wide Acceptance: Over 120 countries recognize and accept documents with an apostille, making it a highly effective means of document authentication for international purposes.
Common Documents That May Require an Apostille:
Birth, death, and marriage certificates
Court documents
Academic diplomas and transcripts
Business agreements and contracts
Power of attorney
